Health Benefits

Everyone has heard of the cliché, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Well, it may be a cliché but it holds some truth in it. According to one study, men who eat one apple a day reduces the risk of heart attack by at least 32%.

Apples are high in fiber but more importantly, they contain high amounts of Vitamin C. Studies have even linked apples with reduced risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, asthma and even diabetes. Eating apples also means lower risks of tumors, lung cancer and even osteoporosis.

Even apple peels are said to have nutritional value because of their antioxidant capabilities that can inhibit the growth of liver and colon cancer cells.

Buying & Storing Apples

Buy apples that are firm and brightly colored. Avoid buying bruised apples as they are already damaged. You want to Take advantage of the fiber in the peel and eat and keep them with the peel. This also preserves the apple’s Vitamin C.

Unfortuntaly, cooking apples also reduces their Vitamin C content. Don’t store apples for too long and keep them in a cool or even refrigerated environment. The cool storage keeps them from losing their natural moisture and keeps them crisp.
